Promoting a Healthy School Environment

Birthday parties and holiday celebrations at school provide a unique opportunity to help make healthful eating fun and exciting for children. Heritage Elementary has had the wonderful opportunity to have nutrition education available to all 3rd graders this year through some grant funding, and as a result we would like to encourage Healthy Celebrations for the whole school.
You might try these ideas for healthy foods at school parties, instead of bringing in cupcakes, cookies and candy:

  • Low-fat flavored milk, 100% juice, sparkling punch or flavored water
  • Fresh fruit, fruit and cheese kabobs, or fruit with low-fat whipped topping
  • Dried fruit (raisins, banana chips) or 100% fruit snacks
  • Whole-grain crackers with cheese
  • Pretzels, popcorn, or graham crackers
  • Hot pretzels
  • Low-fat pudding, or squeezable yogurt
  • Granola bars
